The fight to achieve a low carbon future globally has been one that has been campaigned for over the last 6 years. The Paris agreement was made by over 100 nations, all with a unified agreement of keeping the global temperatures from rising. Recently there was another conference where nations assembled again and came up with the ratchet mechanism. The mechanism came up with a specified objective towards environmental sustainability by focusing on the reduction of coal usage.
Steel and its involvement as a greenhouse gas emitter
Modern society can largely be considered as coming out of the usage and implementation of coal. Steel is one of the greatest components of buildings, bridges, and utensils. It is made of a high percentage of carbon that is necessary for the making of energy. This, therefore, means that decarbonizing steel would be a good way to reduce coal usage and ensure the creation of a sustainable future.
Steel greatly contributes to the workforce and economy of a country. Through the manufacture of steel, other employment opportunities are created which ultimately ensures the improvement of living standards of various people within and without the industry. It, therefore, proves imperative and necessary for steel to be decarbonized rather than been done away with.
InfraBuild Decarbonization of Steel
The original technique for steel production has been through melting raw iron ore and blowing oxygen into it which converts it into steel. This process is not sustainable to the environment as it thrives on using coal. Vik Bansal InfraBuild, a company that deals with the manufacture and distribution of steel led by Vik Bansal use another alternative that relies on the use of an Electric Arc Finance. Instead of using coal, Electric Arc Furnace is charged with scrap metal and melted to make new steel. The process uses 75% less energy than the blasting furnace method, reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Vik Bansal is the current CEO of InfraBuild since July 2021. His experience as a leader in various companies such as Valmont Industries has taught him on maximizing innovations that lead to a sustainable environment and economy. This is why he was instrumental in the development of policies and goals that set the InfraBuild Company on a path towards environmental sustainability.
