Weaponized Social Media Is A Real Thing Say Some Experts

Some experts are sounding the alarm bells when it comes to how social media has been weaponized. This sentence probably would have sounded absurd just ten or so years ago when social media was just starting to catch on with the general public. It was seen as a place where people could chat with one another, share stories about their life, and keep in touch with friends and family. How could something wholesome like this be turned into something grim?

The Financial Times is reporting that Facebook has stated that at least 150 million Americans viewed at least one fake news story that generated from a Russian campaign of disinformation surrounding the last Presidential election. That is important, because it means that at least that many Americans may have been influenced on how to vote based on things that they saw from a foreign power.

We know that most people did not make a voting decision based on posts that they saw on Facebook, but there are surely some percentage who did. Even if they personally did not, they may have mentioned a story that they saw when speaking with others. If that is the case, then they might have helped to spread the propaganda that outside sources wanted them to spread. Regardless, there was influence one way or the other. Considering this, we can now see how social media websites have been weaponized against groups of people in a large-scale way. This matters and is something that all people should be made aware of.

How To Successfully Run A Social Media Campaign

A social media campaign gives you the opportunity to take your business to the next level. You will be able to reach a bigger audience. That is why the return on investment can be high. If your campaign is stagnant, then there are a number of things that you can do to revive it.

Your campaign may be stagnant because you have been using the same tactics for years. That is why it is time for you to use different tactics. Create new and engaging posts on your page. You may also want to post your content at different times.

You will need to interact with your followers. Even though you can reach a lot of followers on social media at one time, nothing beats one on one interactions. Using visual content is another way that you can revive your social media campaign. Most people would rather watch a video than read a blog post or article.

Sponsoring a contest will help revive your social media campaign. Contests give people a reason to like and follow your business. You do not want to rely on just one brand. You can start satellite personal brands. Furthermore, you should keep tabs on what your competitors are doing. You should pay attention to who is following them and what they are interested in. Try using some of the strategies that your competitors use.

Things That Make a Social Media Campaign Successful

When you are running a social media campaign, you need to make sure that it is profitable. According to Forbes, these following tips will help you.

First, you should NOT treat it as something that is a free strategy. You have to invest in it. Invest in someone who knows social media marketing and who knows how to set up profitable campaigns. You should also invest in tools that can help you out. In addition, you need a strategy. This means that you cannot just post things randomly and expect it to pay off. You need to plan what you are going to do.

You also have to be consistent. This means posting things that follow a consistent theme and which are targeted to a consistent audience. In addition, you need to post with the right frequency. Of course, posting too much might not be a good idea, as you might annoy your followers. However, at the same time, you need to make sure that your social media feed gets updated on a regular basis.

You also have to provide value. This means that you have to post things that your readers are interested in. You have to post authoritative content. It is also a good idea to post things like discounts so that your audience gets a lot of value from you. You should also be personal and human so that you connect with your audience. You should be professional, but people have to be able to relate to you.

Trends to Use In Your Social Media Campaigns

When posting on social media, it is important to use the following tips to make your social media campaigns successful. The following are all trends that are increasingly found in social media campaigns.

One is to include rich forms of content. Basically, this means content that increases engagement. One example of this would be videos. Another would gifs, which are extremely popular. Memes are also included, as are polls.

You should also focus on user generated content. This means that if a customer posts a photo of themselves happily using your product, you should promote that photo by displaying it on your own feed and by reposting it. User generated content is extremely powerful, because people trust recommendations from people who are like them.

You should also focus on the type of content you put out. On one hand, you want to post evergreen content, which is content that will always be relevant. However, at other times, it is a good idea to post time limited content, as this usually generates more engagement and more buzz.

You also have to make sure that your content is optimized for mobile devices. For example, if you are sending out emails, make sure to use a template that works on mobile devices. The same goes for social media campaigns. Make sure that the pictures appear nicely on mobile devices.

Seven Social Media Campaigns that Brands can Leverage to Stand Out

Facebook boasts of over two billion active users, and businesses are ready to leverage the platform including other social media networks to further their agenda. Social media marketing is presently the in-thing for brands, but since social media trends begin to change as soon as they have been established, many businesses are grappling with social media marketing. However, there are various ways that brands can stay afloat despite the dynamicity of social networks. Syed Balkhi (an entrepreneur, a growth hacker, and marketer) shared seven social media campaigns that businesses can adapt to stay visible to social media users.

· Use of humor – Balkhi suggests that laughter is a powerful tool that can entice users to find more about a brand. He uses last year’s Deadpool movie to illustrate his point. The film went on to be one of the highest grossing R-rated movies because the marketing team adopted humor in billboards, video clips, and posters meant to promote the movie. In fact, one of the billboards went viral on social media.

· Use of behind the scene clips – social media users are fascinated by how characters in their favorite ads or movies behave in real life. There is no better way to quench their curiosity than availing behind the scenes videos.

· Capitalizing current trends such as the 2014’s ice bucket challenge

· Use of renowned personnel – social media users trust messages passed across by people that they already know such as celebrities.

· Make the business’ stand known – some people may argue that this might be detrimental to business, but Balkhi is convinced that businesses stand to gain trust and recognition by demonstrating to the world that they care about an important cause.

· Use of ChatBots – social media users often send messages to inquire about a product/service. A ChatBot will ensure that responses are generated 24/7.

· Giveaway contests

Pinterest Generates $150 Million In New Round of Venture Funding

Pinterest, the online digital catalog of inspiration and ideas, announced it raised $150 million in venture capital to help pay for its visual search campaign. The company released a statement stating it raised the capital based on a $12.3 billion company valuation.

According to reports, the company raised the capital at the same share price as it did back in April of 2015 when the company’s valuation stood at $11 billion. The company reports the higher valuation was due to an increase in the number of shares currently outstanding. Pinterest also stated it started issuing stock to its employees as part of their compensation.

The Hartford Financial Services Group valued Pinterest’s stock price at $32.31 per share. Hartford is a mutual fund company with an investment in Pinterest. As of 2017, Pinterest has raised close to $1.5 billion from venture capitalists and investors, including capital from Bessemer Venture Partners, SV Angel and Rakuten, Andreessen and Horowitz.

According to Forbes, Pinterest has 175 million users who log into the platform monthly. People use the platform to find and save “pins” for such things as recipes, travel, furniture and do-it-yourself guides. The company uses “buyable pins,” which gives users the capability to find and purchase items. Pinterest also generates income from advertising revenues. Pinterest states it hopes to generate $500 million in income in 2017. The company earned $300 million in 2016 and $100 million in 2015.

Statistics show that people who use mobile devices to search for items on Pinterest increased by 40 percent compared to the same time last year. The company reports that revenues have doubled on individual search queries. The company plans to use the new round of funding to enhance its visual search tools.

Papa Johns Shows How To Repair A Social Media Disaster

From time to time companies run into a unique problem in the digital age. That is to say that they have the problem of having a social media disaster of some type or another. These disasters happen because they make some kind of misstep that causes them to have to go out and apologize to the public or their customers. Either that or they simply make an error that makes the brand look bad. In the world of instant reactions and the ability to share the mistake far and wide with just a few clicks, it can quickly spiral into a disaster.

Papa Johns Pizza company may have shown the world how to handle such an accident according to kcclaveria.com. What they did was see the mistake that had been made and took appropriate actions to try to mend the fences and make what could have been a disaster something much less vital.

What happened was a lady received a receipt from the company when she placed her pizza order. When she looked at the receipt under the section titled “name” the employee had typed in a racially offensive term. The customer was Asian and the employee had typed in an offensive slur against that racial group. The customer then tweeted out the receipt to the Papa Johns Twitter account.

The people at Papa Johns acted quickly and extended a big apology. They also said that the employee who had typed in this particular message was being terminated. They were smart to include this last part because most of the people upset by what had happened wanted to see some type of action as a result.

The company was also smart to keep in check with their social media profiles even on the weekends. They needed to keep an eye on things because you never know when something like this might happen. At first the Internet took it and ran with it and called out the company. However, before too long everything was settled down when Papa Johns did the right thing and made sure to put their customers first.

Selfie Social Media Campaign Backfires

There are plenty of social media campaigns that work out great. They are ones that capture the public’s imagination and work well for the companies that are behind those campaigns. This is great for marketing because it does not have to be that expensive but can at the same time generate a huge result for the company that pulls this off. That being said, there are some social media campaigns that just do not work out.

One campaign that did not turn out as planned was the Walkers potato chip company campaign according to CNN.com. The whole idea behind the campaign was that people were supposed to send in selfies in order to have a chance to win tickets to a football game. Some of those pictures were even blasted out on big screens on popular streets in the United Kingdom.

This might seem like a good idea that would generate interest as well as reward some lucky individual with the football tickets that they would like to have. However, the public quickly took this over and sent in pictures of well known killers and even child molesters. It doesn’t seem like those who were tasked with screening out some of these types of things understood what was happening perfectly. They allowed those pictures to go up along with the rest.

The pranksters had their fun with this one and were able to get the pictures of criminals up on the big screens. The Walkers company was not so pleased with what happened with this campaign, but it is hard to deny that it did get them some attention. Unfortunately for them, it is not the kind of attention that you want to have shown upon your company.

Considering this, it will probably be some time before another company takes the route of running a campaign whereby they show pictures up on the big screens of then streets of London and elsewhere for a very long time to come.

The Labour Party’s Use Of Social Media Helped Them Do Well At Election Time

The Labour Party in the United Kingdom is already a popular Party with younger voters. At least it is more popular than the alternatives. That is why it was so wise for the leaders in that Party to use social media to help energize those young people to come out to vote.

Bloomberg Politics News is very clear when it details exactly how the Labour Party reached out to younger people to try to turn them out for the election. The Party put out a lot of messages in their favor and then had people sharing them with their friends and family all over social media. Quickly this helped to spread the message of what the Labour Party wanted to have heard.

The best part of this whole saga for Labour is that they personally did not have to have their hands on the cookie jar so to speak. It did not have to be so in your face that the message was coming from them. Rather, they just had people sharing what they already put out there. It works out to be essentially a free endorsement from the people who share these posts. That endorsement is strong because it goes out to trusted friends and family who already like the person sharing it. That helps bolster the message.

Labour capitalized on social media while their main opponents the Conservative Party did not use social media nearly as effectively. This may be the reason why even though the Conservatives were leading in the polls quite heavily, they were the ones who actually lost seats in this election. They were expected to pick up even more seats, but that is not how things panned out. The younger voters showed up, and they showed up heavily in favor of Labour.

Given this outcome, perhaps the Conservatives will think twice about how they use social media to engage with their voters in the future. If this election showed anything it is that the power of social media is not to be ignored.

Did A Failure To Use Social Media Campaign Cost Conservatives The Election?

The Conservative Party of the United Kingdom has had a huge shaming after having a terrible result in an election that they called for. Although the Party won more seats than any other Party, they actually lost seats compared to where they were and they also lost their overall majority. Given this, they should now be looking back and reflecting at what went so wrong.

The Independent reports that one area that the Party might need to look at again is the fact that their social media efforts never once called on voters to get out and get registered to vote.

It is one thing to miss the mark on social media when it comes to an election, but it is something else entirely not to remind people to get registered to vote. It is important to remind your voters this as often as possible because you want them to get those papers turned in and then get out there and vote on Election Day.

The Conservative Party failing to even mention registering to vote even once on their social media pages just goes to show how much they believed they were going to sweep into power without any problems. That is often a fatal error to make when you are running a national campaign.

The Conservative Party is going to have to do a lot of soul searching to figure out what they can do to correct the problems that they suffered in this past election. They can correct this one pretty easily if they set their mind to doing so, but the fact that it was able to happen in the first place should be some kind of an embarrassment to the Party. Going forward they will surely need to do better to reach out to people on the Internet where so many things are decided these days. If they are unable to do so they may suffer worse losses going into future elections.
